8vo. pp. [2] (blank), [7], 313, [14]. Signatures: *4, a-u8, x4 Calf, tooled. Signature on title page ‘Andreas Roclerus: 79.’ Printer's device on title page and, in different form, on verso of last leaf.
Contains the forged Roman will of ‘Gallus Favonius Jucundus.’ First printed by Antonio Agustín, Dialoghi intorno alla medaglie inscrittioni et altre antichita (Rome, [1592]; first Spanish publication, Saragossa, 1587), together with the spurious ‘Rabelais’ Edition of the Will of Cuspidius (Lyon, 1532, see also Bib# 4102768/Fr# 225 in this collection) and the Contractus venditionis. While François Rabelais and many of his contemporaries believed that the will of Cuspidius and the contract of a sale were authentic relics derived from inscriptions, Agustín attributed them to Fra Giovanni Giocondo. It is more likely that the will was a Renaissance forgery by Pontano and that the contract was a late-antique parody; see Bib#4102768/Fr#225 and R. Cooper, “Rabelais’s Edition of the Will of Cuspidius and the Roman Contract of Sale,” in Études Rabelaisiennes, 14 (1978), pp. 59–70). See also H. M. Adams, Catalogue of Books Printed on the Continent of Europe, 1501-1600, in Cambridge Libraries. 2 vols. Cambridge, 1967, M609.
